At the Cross Keys we believe a pub should remain a pub. So whether you want a pint or a pie (or both) you will always find a welcome here, a genuine Bath pub. And we keep it simple. There are no fruit machines and no flat screens so the buzz we have is entirely man-made. The food is freshly prepared, well sourced, good value and sometimes even grown on site.

Situated just a short taxi ride (2 ½ miles) from Bath city centre, the Packhorse Inn nestles in the centre of the idyllic country village of Southstoke. The present building is in excess of 500 years old. The story of the old bath stone building begins at least 700 years ago with the building of a priory in Southstoke. As was the custom the monks built a guesthouse or hostelry to provide shelter with food and drink for travellers and pilgrims. In 1489 the Pack Horse was rebuilt with two fair chambers upon the ground floor and the same upon the first. Curiously the house was, and still is, divided by a passage way through its middle that leads to the church, but it was not until 1647 that anyone thought to put up a door to keep out the draughts.

The Pulteney Arms remains as one of only a few pubs in Bath that can say with any accuracy that it is over 200 years old. Deep rooted in the excellent sporting culture of Bath and supporting local Rugby, Hockey, Rowing and Cricket, it has been a firm favourite of sports men and women alike for many years. Visiting supporters have always made a bee line for the Pulteney Arms where they enjoy the conviviality of local ‘rivals’.

The Raven is a traditional family owned and run Free House which means that, unlike the majority of pubs in the UK, we are not tied to a brewery or any other business. The pub is composed of two Georgian town houses located on a quiet cobbled street in the centre of Bath a few steps from the famous Milsom Street. We have two fully stocked bars. By the way... We are not a wine bar, we don’t do loud music, slot machines or TVs.

The pub is described by CAMRA (The Campaign of Real Ale) as a "rare and unspoiled pub interior of outstanding historic interest" and it is listed on the National Inventory of Heritage Pubs. There are four different drinking areas - the smaller bar, still used by many of the regulars, features a long single bench known as "death row" where a complimentary pinch of snuff can still be found in the tins on the ledge above the wall panelling.
